After 6.5 years in prison, James has become a published expert on mass incarceration and electronic monitoring. He co-coordinates the Illinois Campaign for Prison Phone Justice, Build Programs Not Jails campaign, and First Followers Reentry. He works at the Center for African Studies at UIUC.
